Barrett(2000) Chapter 3 - Response.

In the article “Describing Art”, Barrett talks about the process of an in-depth analysis into describing the arrangements, visual construction, and composition. He pointed out some of the aspects that can influence a positive critique and a negative critique without swaying the viewer to lean towards a biased conclusion. Barrett not only touch on the critiquing methods for just one medium, Barrett provided examples into other mediums of art from sculptural, to performance art. The author even went in-depth into deciphering Dale Chihuly’s medium of glass blowing and pointing out the avenues into the critics’ conclusions of classifying it as art, or craft. Barrett informs the reader of the importance in using descriptive analogies to separate the visual content, and the conceptual ideas to create associations; whether the artist creates them intentionally or if those associations are unintentional.
